  • Why Pokémon?『PROJECT: OUTWEAR』

A lot of people have asked me why I chose Pokémon as my theme for my latest collection. Well, where do I start.., I'll try to keep it as short as possible, either way, if you want to know, keep reading.

When we were told that we could decide our own theme for this project, I got really excited. It felt good to have your own choice, but there were so many. How I came so settle with something as "childish" as Pokémon has a few reasons.

I wanted to make a collection that would cover a big age group, not just teenagers, kids or elder people. But how do I do that? My thoughts spun around for a while before I decided to just take my biggest inspiration and theme from something I love myself, which would also make the whole project a lot more fun if I enjoyed the chosen theme.

People here in the west world find Pokémon childish, and I can agree to some point and I see why they thing that, but for me, I grew up with the love for Pokémon, watching the anime, playing the games, all the plushies, books, pens, towels, backpacks and what-not, my first movie ever to watch in a cinema was Pokémon as well. It's something I love and grew up with and I can honestly still say that I love it.

It's still HUGE and more popular than ever in Japan, where it obviously came from. Having opening the biggest Pokémon Center ever in Tokyo just last December.

With new generations of Pokémon coming out with each game, they've gone from 150 to over 700 in less than ten years. I see Pokémon as something timeless, it never gets old in my opinion. Big or small, tall or short, young or old, doesn't matter, fans come in all size and shapes and we all love it just as much. They already make a lot of merchandise with almost everything you can think about, but I've barely seen clothing, most of all coats.

So my reason for choosing this as my theme is because of the fact that there are fans in all ages, I think it's timeless and I get a nostalgia feeling, it's like re-living my childhood and I think these reasons are good enough for me.
